Appointment of five researchers as members of saf
22 October 2023

The Chief Scientific Officers in the Life and Physical Sciences, Dr Mohamed El Brolosy (Harvard University) and Dr Elham Fadaly (Apple), have approved the appointment of five researchers to a full membership of saf. The researchers were appointed to a saf membership for their exceptional intellectual and academic promise in their early careers. This appointment reinforces the commitment of saf to scientific excellence in the Arab World. The appointed researchers are:

Abdelrahman Khalifa (Egypt). Khalifa is a PhD Student at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research. He Holds a MSc in Biology from the University of Munich. Khalifa's research focuses on connectomic screening of genetic mouse models of autism and has published in several high impact factor journals, including: Science, Journal of Physiological Reports.

Sherif Gerges (Egypt). Gerges is a PhD Student at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University and the CEO of Acurasset. He holds a BSc in Molecular Biology from Montclair State University.Gerges research focuses on exploring the genetic and biological bases of neuropsychiatric disorders; which hitherto remain among the most untreatable illnesses and are charactered by their complex etiology and has published in several high impact factor journals, including: Nature Microbiology, Cell, Journal of Theoretical Biology and others.

Dr Eiman Elwakeel (Egypt). Elwakeel is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Broad Institute of Harvard University and MIT. She holds a PhD in Medicine from the Goethe University Frankfurt. Elwakeel develops comprehensive genome wide CRISPR libraries to screen digenic dependencies across different signaling pathways and has published in several high impact factor journals, including: Cancer Research, Cancer Cell and others.

Dr Shimaa Ebrahim (Egypt). Ebrahim is an associate research scientist in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at Yale University. She holds a PhD in Chemical Ecology from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology and the University of Jena. Ebrahim's research focuses on unraveling the secrets of tsetse flies, notorious vectors of African trypanosomiasis and has published in several high impact factor journals, including: Science, Nature communications and others.

Dr Ali Shaib (Lebanon). Dr Shaib is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Professor Silvio Rizzoli, where he is also a Group Leader. He holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Saarland. Shaib develops a new imaging technology called ONE Microscopy, that allows a one nanometre resolution or better using conventional, inexpensive microscopes and has published in several high impact factor journals, including: Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, Neuroscience.
